Over 130 Years of Service
Frederick William Turner was 40 years old when he emigrated from England to Canada in 1874. After having served 14 years as supervisor in a London funeral home, he hoped for new opportunities in a new land. When he disembarked in Toronto, he found a city of barely 50,000 people, but the opportunities he was seeking were plentiful. Four years after he was hired by a funeral parlour on Queen Street, he bought the business, and set about establishing a tradition of attentive, detailed funeral service. Several years later, he brought his son-in-law, Thomas Porter into the business and, as more and more families trusted them with their funeral arrangements, the partners moved to increasingly larger quarters along Queen Street West.
When Frederick Turner died at the end of the century, Thomas Porter assumed control of the business, and dedicated himself to expanding the family's commitment to the community. Ever since then, the firm and its heritage of service have been guided by successive generations of the Porter family. Thomas' grandson, Ray Porter, continued the expansion of the company, and is remembered even today for his distinction and professionalism. The current president of the company, Doug Porter, is the great-grandson of Thomas Porter.
